BIR to temporarily suspend investigation of tax returns during Christmas holiday

The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) is temporarily suspending the investigation of tax returns nationwide for the duration of the Christmas holiday starting on Dec.16 up to Jan. 8 next year.

Revenue officials who declined to be named said BIR Commissioner Romeo D. Lumagui, Jr. Is expected to issue the suspension order shortly to give taxpayers joyful and meaningful celebration of the occasion

They said audit break will also give fieldmen more time in the preparation and submission of final assessment reports to their superiors.

The same sources said the investigation stoppage is part of the management policy of being honest and decent in assessing and collecting deficiency taxes.

Lumagui instructed earlier fieldmen not to rush the audit work and threaten taxpayers with sanctions to establish rapport.

He said if taxpayers are placed in comfortable position, they would be more cooperative in complying with their obligation to the government.
