Students from the Philippine Science High School - Central Visayas Campus (PSHS) in Argao, Cebu brought home gold medals for their innovations that promote healthy lifestyle and detection of microplastics during the 2022 Asian International Innovation Exhibition 2022 (AIINEx-2022) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Geralde, and Rob Eishico C. Rentuza receives two gold medals in the 2022 Asian International Innovation Exhibition 2022 (AIINEx-2022) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.(Photo courtesy of PSHS)

AIINEx-2022 aims to enhance research cooperation and excellence in science, technology, education, finance, and social sciences.

Two teams produced the winning innovations which are Project LIKSI (Lifestyle Inhibitor by Keeping Track of Sodium concentration in bodily fluids to limit Dietary Intake) and Project IMAHE (A Portable Water Quality Assessment Device).

Keith C. Geralde, Jacklord T. Pongasi, Rob Eishico Rentuza, and Eugene J. Verano created Project LIKSI.

Dr. Benito A. Baje, Paul Isaac O. Dizon, Arlene Cahoy-Agosto, Gencianus Alphonsus D. Retardo served as innovation advisers. LIKSI is a device that can detect daily sodium intake concentration in sweat and alert the user of their readings to promote a healthier lifestyle. LIKSI correlates various sodium ion concentrations to Arduino analog digital sensor outputs.

Moreover, LIKSI is a device with 3D-printed components that uses an ion-selective electrode and Arduino computing to determine short-term dietary sodium intake from sweat sodium concentration. The LCD displays low, normal, and high levels of sodium through the LCD.

LIKSI uses a non-invasive method of sodium concentration detection to limit dietary intake via a portable device to provide a more accessible and convenient way to detect sodium levels. Project LIKSI aims to reduce the risk of developing diseases due to abnormal salt consumption, thereby improving people's health and well-being and promoting responsible consumption.

David Elijah Corsini C. Atup, Josefino, Nino O. Ligan, and Chesyne Danielle G. Pepito created IMAHE, a portable water quality assessment device that samples water, takes an image, and detects and measures potentially present microplastic particles.

The invention aims to improve and provide a preliminary method for on-site assessment of microplastic presence and sizes. IMAHE also hopes to address United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6 “Clean water and sanitation”, as well as goal 14 “Life below water”.

IMAHE is as easy to operate with just a simple input and a press of a button. IMAHE gives users timely results which can be done in an on-site setting, for preliminary detection of microplastics. Given the device’s accessibility, it can also be used for education and awareness by students, teachers, and even scientists as a method to check for microplastic presence in our environment.
