The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) has awarded the Guagua District Jail-Male Dormitory for its contributions to human rights policy particularly, in ensuring humane safekeeping and development of persons deprived of liberty (PDL).
The Guagua District Jail-Male Dormitory bagged this year's Gawad Gabay Karapatan in a ceremony held in Quezon City.
Jail Supt. Teddy Madria, Guagua District Jail-Male Dormitory warden expressed gratitude to all the stakeholders of their unit who helped them in making sure that human rights activities, interventions, training, and seminars are being administered to PDL amidst the Covid-19 pandemic.
“Initially, it’s hard to gain support for our cause but eventually, as we go dealing with various LGUs (local government units), NGOs (non-government organizations), NGAs (national government agencies), religious groups, capable private individuals, our vision in attaining and establishment of humane safekeeping of our overall operations were all put into reality,” Madria said.
“We have been implementing various projects and developmental programs for the enhancement and promotion of human rights in jails,” he added.
Meanwhile, Jail Supt. Roque Constantino Sison III of the Dagupan City Jai –Male Dormitory was recognized with a Gawad Bantay Karapatan award for his notable deeds and programs on human rights abuse and violations prevention.
The 2022 Gawad Karapatang Pantao is the highest recognition given by the CHR to government agencies and employees who champion human rights activities in their respective organizations or communities.
Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) chief Jail Director Allan Iral commended the awardees for their recent feat and for upholding the rights of PDL under their care.
“Ang buong kawanihan ng BJMP ay lubos na nagagalak sa tagumpay na nakamit ng Guagua District Jail at ni Supt. Sison sa kakatapos lamang na 2022 Gawad Karapatang Pantao ng Commission on Human Rights (The whole BJMP organization is deeply elated by the honor bestowed of the Guagua District Jail and Supt. Sison in the recently concluded 2022 Gawad Karapatang Pantao of the Commission on Human Rights),’’ Iral stated.
The BJMP chief pointed out that the human rights honors are testament that despite the many challenges, the bureau managed to maintain, respect and uplift rights of the persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) in the jail facilities. (Chito A. Chavez)
