After BTS' Jin, Suga next in line to enlist in military as a social service agent

After BTS member Jin enlisted in the military on Dec. 13, the next in line for the mandatory duty is Suga.

Born in 1993, Suga is the second oldest member of BTS followed by J-Hope and RM, born in 1994; Jimin and V, born in 1995; and Jungkook, born in 1997.

On the day that Jin enlisted, it was reported that Suga has been classified as a social service agent for his military service instead of as an active duty soldier, according to Korean media. There is no announcement yet on his enlistment date.

It was not known why Suga will be serving as a social service agent although he has the option to serve as an active duty soldier. Reports stated that it could be due to his shoulder injury.

On Nov. 3, 2020, Suga underwent surgery to treat his torn shoulder tissue.

“Suga underwent surgery to repair his torn shoulder labrum on November 3. The surgery, to address a problem that had constantly been a health and wellness issue for Suga, was completed successfully and he is currently resting and recovering following his physician's advice that Suga must undergo a strict and unhindered period of recovery.” announced Big Hit Entertainment then.

It added, “As many fans know, Suga has long suffered from shoulder-related health issues. Suga's shoulder issues began when he was injured in an accident that occured in 2012 before his debut, and he was diagnosed with a dislocated shoulder in 2013.”

“Shoulder pains continued until he was further diagnosed in 2019 with ‘posterior labral tear of his left shoulder,’ which means that the cartilage around his left shoulder joint has been torn. Since then, he has continued to receive various treatment to prevent his injury from affecting his activities,” it said.

Under Korea’s Military Service Act, social service agent refers to “persons called up to serve in the field of public interest to support social service duties, administrative duties, etc. related to social welfare, hygiene, medical service, education, culture, environment, safety, etc., which are necessary for the following agencies, etc. serving public interest,” according to a copy of the law on the Korean Law Information Center.

Social service agents are assigned in state agencies, local governments, public organizations and social welfare facilities.

Jin entered the 5th Infantry Division recruit training center and will be discharged on June 12, 2024 after 18 months in service.

Big Hit Music announced on Oct. 17 that all BTS members will fulfill their military service and regroup in 2025.
