Vanessa Sarno, Kristel Macrohon shoot for World Championship glory

Sarno and Macrohon will be tested in the women’s 71kg Group B division with total weight entries of 235 and 240 kilograms, respectively.

They will be up against the B field composed of Venezuela’s Laura Peinado Mejias, Dominican Republic’s Daiana Serrano, Canada’s Alexis Ashworth, South Korea’s Mun Minhee, Brazil’s Amanda Da Costa Schott, Germany’s Lisa Marie Schweizer and Israel’s Nikol Rubanovich.

Thirty other lifters are also competing in other groups including 2019 Junior World Champion Liao Guifang, who has a total entry of 260 kg; hometown bet Mari Sanchez, a two-time silver medalist at the Pan American Championships; former Commonwealth Games winner Marie Fegue of Cameroon; and three-time European champion Loredana Toma of Romania.

Sarno, who is being groomed as Diaz’s heir apparent, lorded it over in the 2021 Southeast Asian Games in Hanoi, Vietnam and in the 2020 Asian Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

She holds the national and SEAG records in her division with 104 kg in snatch, 135 kg in clean and jerk, and 239 kg in total.

The 26-year-old Macrohon, for her part, won the SEAG gold in 2019. She also collected bronze medals in the 2017 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games and 2020 Asian Championships but in different weight categories.

So far, the Philippines has only won three gold medals, all from reigning Olympics champion Hidilyn Diaz in the snatch, clean and jerk, and total of the women’s 55kgs.

Nestor Colonia came close to the podium but could only finish seventh in the men’s 55kgs, even as John Febuar Ceniza finished at 10th in the men’s 61kgs.
