Korea's player No. 9 Cho Gue-sung's popularity soars, to appear on TV show
By now, Korean football player Cho Gue-sung is experiencing a surge in popularity after appearing in the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.
With his good looks, Cho Gue-sung, 24, caught the attention of World Cup fans and Korean celebrities.




Particularly, when BTS’ Jungkook posed for a photo with the South Korean team when he performed at the opening ceremony of the World Cup in Qatar on Nov. 20, Cho Gue-sung was also noticed by netizens for his looks.
In Korea’s game against Ghana on Nov. 28, Cho Gue-sung scored two goals to become the first Korean player to succeed in getting at least two goals in a single World Cup match.
Through his FIFA World Cup Qatar appearances, Cho Gue-sung’s Instagram followers exploded.
Bettingexpert.com collected the number of Instagram followers of World Cup players to find out who gained the most.
According to its data, Cho Gue-sung gained the most followers percentage-wise. Before the World Cup, Cho Gue-sung had 30,501 followers as of Nov. 15.
By Dec. 5, Cho Gue-sung’s Instagram followers rose to 2,342,544, an increase of 7,580.22 percent or 2,312,043 followers, translating to an earning potential of $23,425.44.
In total, all of the players have gained over 107 million followers on Instagram, according to the website.
South Korea made it to the top 16 in the World Cup but lost to Brazil, ending its World Cup campaign.
Since returning to South Korea with his other teammates, Cho Gue-sung has been busy giving interviews to news programs.
South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol and First Lady Kim Keon-hee hosted a dinner on Dec. 8 for the national football team including Cho Gue-sung. Cho Gue-sung even had a selfie with the first lady.



"I was deeply moved by players who fought to the end with unwavering heart, To our people and me, you are the World Cup champions," said the president.
He told the team, "You are more than athletes; you are missionaries of peace who provide comfort and hope to everyone facing adversity. Please have more confidence. As the president, I will strongly support you with better conditions so that you can confidently play with all your strength at the 2026 World Cup."
Cho Gue-sung was also mentioned by Korean celebrities.
In the Dec. 10 episode of “Hangout with Yoo,” K-pop group Lovelyz member Mijoo mentioned the player.
“For some reason, I think, Lee Mijoo and soccer player Cho Gue-sung will date in the future,” she said in the 80s themed episode.
Cho Gue-sung is set to appear on the tvN Korean entertainment program “You Quiz on the Block.”
