Jail Senior Inspector Rhys Yvan Pawid has set a Philippine record in the sport of backyard marathon.
“Backyard ultramarathon is a form of ultramarathon race where competitors must consecutively run 6,706 meters (6.701 km) in less than one hour,’’ the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) said Sunday, Dec. 11.
The previous national backyard ultramarathon record was 21 loops/hours (140.7 km) set last April at the Tap out Backyard Ultra in Maco, Davao de Oro.
In the event, loops are repeated hourly with no predefined finish. The competitor who completes the loop that no other competitors have completed will be declared as the winner.’’
Pawid completed the 22 loops/hour (147.4km) during the 2022 Jingle Balls Backyard Ultra held at the trails of Camp John Hay, Baguio City by King of the Mountain Trail Run which started at 5 a.m. on Dec. 9 and ended at 3 a.m. the following morning.
“After having been declared as the last man standing, Pawid was declared as the winner,’’ the BJMP added.
BJMP chief Jail Director Allan Iral commended Pawid’s astonishing accomplishment saying that “it takes strong discipline and grit for such feat kaya nakakabilib talaga (that is why is is truly admirable).’’
Following Pawid’s victory, Iral cited the “the value of health and sports programs among (BJMP) personnel.
When it comes to fitness, Iral pointed out that the BJMP personnel are serious about their health care since it is totally unacceptable to have the persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) that the bureau is supervising to be more fit than them. (Chito A. Chavez)
