Jeff Napa turns emotional, admits NU felt pressured to deliver from top

National University head coach Jeff Napa revealed that pressure got the best of them in the latter part of the UAAP Season 85 men’s basketball tournament.
The 41-year-old tactician couldn’t hide his tears following NU’s 69-61 loss to defending champion University of the Philippines in their Final Four clash last Dec. 7.
NU, which was heavily favored for one of the two twice-to-beat advantages in the second round, couldn’t ride on its momentum and ultimately lost its last two games in the elimination round, writing them off the incentive.
“Na-feel ‘yong pressure number two, number three na pala kami . Kailangan na namin manalo. Kailangan maukuha namin ‘yong twice-to-beat . But at least alam nila na pwede pala kami,” said Napa.
Not only Napa felt responsible for the loss but admitted that he might’ve pushed his players to the limit without taking into account their lack of experience in the long stretch.
“It’s my fault na masyado ko silang na-push sa ganoong limit. Nakalimutan ko na bata pa rin sila kailangan pa rin nila ng guidance,” Napa added.
Despite eight straight seasons of heartbreak, Napa is thankful to have made it to the Final Four stage.
"Syempre malungkot. Di naman totally disappointed. So sad lang na natapos kaagad ‘yong run namin ngayon. Siguro bawi kami next year. Pero doon ka talaga natututo sa mga malalaks na kalaban eh. Kahit sabihin nating talo, kailangan namin matutunan muna eh. Itong ganitong experience sa ganitong level," he concluded.
