Cyclone Rosal brings rains, but won’t make landfall

Forecast Track and Intensity of Tropical Depression Rosal (PAGASA)

Tropical depression Rosal will continue to bring rains over parts of Luzon and Visayas but is unlikely to make landfall, based on the latest bulletin of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

In its 5 p.m. bulletin, PAGASA said Rosal was last spotted 285 kilometers east of Infanta, Quezon.

It has maintained its maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 55 kph.

“Rosal is forecast to intensify while moving over the Philippine Sea and may reach the tropical storm in the next 24 hours. However, due to the interaction with the northeast monsoon (amihan), the tropical cyclone may weaken into a tropical depression on Monday (Dec. 12) and become a remnant low on Tuesday (Dec. 13),” PAGASA said.

“Tropical depression Rosal is forecast to decelerate while moving north-northwestward or northward in the near-term before turning northeastward for the remainder of the forecast period,” it added.

Strong winds, heavy rains may affect parts of Luzon, Visayas

Although it is not expected to make landfall, PAGASA said Rosal may bring strong winds in areas under tropical cyclone wind signal number 1.

Signal No. 1 remains hoisted over the northern portion of Catanduanes, particularly Pandan, Gigmoto, Bagamanoc, Panganiban, Viga, and Caramoran.

Rosal may also bring moderate to occasional intense rains over Bicol Region and Quezon, while moderate to heavy rains are possible in Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan, and Western Visayas.

Light to occasional heavy rains may also prevail over Aurora, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and the rest of Visayas.

By Sunday, Dec. 11, light to occasional heavy rains may persist in Quezon, Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan, Bicol Region, and Western Visayas.

“Under these conditions, flooding and rain-induced landslides are expected, especially in areas that are highly or very highly susceptible to these hazards as identified in hazard maps and in localities with significant antecedent rainfall,” PAGASA warned.

Furthermore, occasional gusts associated with the northeast monsoon may also be experienced in the coastal and mountainous areas of Batanes, Babuyan Islands, Apayao, and northern parts of Ilocos Norte and Cagayan.
