Cainta's 'Sumbingtik Festival' parade draws huge crowd

After two years of being postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the traditional float parade which is part of the “Sumbingtik Festival 2022” in Cainta, Rizal, drew a big crowd of spectators and revelers.

The “Sumbingtik Festival 2022” grand float parade featured clowns, jugglers, freak show characters including the comic icon, “Zuma” and mermaids that filled the main road of the town on Wednesday night, Nov. 30, ushering in the two-day fiesta.

Local officials and employees of the Cainta Municipal Government and schools and business establishments based in Cainta joined the parade which lasted for more than four hours.

The festival carries the theme, “Pistang Perya Sa Cainta” (Carnival Feast in Cainta).

Lt. Col. Ruben Piquero, Cainta's chief of police, said that despite the huge crowd, the grand float parade ended orderly with no report of major untoward incident.

During the festival, the façade of houses in Barangay Santo Nińo are adorned with decorations of various designs and colors to highlight the carnival-inspired theme. Other houses, by tradition, are adorned with native products Barangay Santo Nińo is famous for- suman (glutinous rice wrapped in native leaves), bibingka (rice cake), latik (toasted coconut milk curd), and coconut.

Malacanang had earlier declared Dec. 1 as a special non-working day in Cainta, in observance of the feast day of the town’s patroness, the Our Lady of Light. Masses will be offered at the Diocesan Shrine of the Our Lady of Light Parish in the morning and evening.
