The local government of Caloocan City led the celebration of the Regional Science and Technology Week at the University of Caloocan City (UCC) Congressional Campus on Thursday, Dec. 1.

The Regional Science and Technology Week is an activity of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) in the National Capital Region (NCR) to educate locals on DOST's latest innovative products and services.

The city government also led the opening of the exhibit which showcased various inventions in science and technology that seek to help in addressing the concerns in the region.

The exhibit is open to the public until Saturday, Dec. 3.

“Science and technology are the keys towards innovation and societal development. Malaking bahagi po ito ng ating pang araw-araw na buhay at mas mabilis at epektibong mga proseso at resulta (Science and technology are the keys to social change and development. It is a big part of our daily lives, faster and more effective processes and results),” Caloocan City Mayor Dale Gonzalo “Along” Malapitan said in his welcome address.

Malapitan also expressed his support and appreciation for the projects of DOST and its partner agencies.

“Kami po sa pamahalaang lungsod ay nagpapasalamat sa DOST at sa iba pang ahensya ng pamahalaang nasyonal sa pagtulong sa amin sa pagsisikap na imulat ang mga Batang Kankaloo sa larangan ng agham at teknolohiya (We in the city government are grateful to the DOST and other national government agencies for helping us in our efforts to educate the Kankaloo Children in the field of science and technology),” he added.

The event features innovations in job creation, wealth protection, and sustainable alternatives for future generations like food stimulators, 3D printing, and earthquake intensity meters.

The DOST awarded the city government with Science and Technology Academic and Research-Based Openly-Operated KioskS (STARBOOKS), a kiosk that provides thousands of digitized science and technology resources to students and teachers.

The DOST said the STARBOOKS aid research endeavors through portals where residents can have access to scientific information from DOST Science and Technology Information Network of the Philippines (ScINET-PHIL), Philippine eLib (e-library) project sources, online resources, and subscribed databases.

Among the guests were Caloocan City First District Rep. Oscar Malapitan, DOST Regional Operations Undersecretary Sancho Mabborang, DOST-NCR Officer-in-charge Engr. Romelen Tresvalles, and DOST-NCR Caloocan, Malabon, Navotas and Valenzuela (Camanava) Director Warren Gomez.
