Volunteerism is a “critical portion” of the Philippines’ co-hosting of the FIBA World Cup 2023 according to Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP).

The SBP, which officially launched “The Volunteers Program”, will be tasked to gather and train volunteers in the months leading to the World Cup.

About 500 volunteers are being eyed by the local organizing committee “who will complement the workforce to make this Aug. 25 to Sept. 1, 2023 event successful.”

The monumental task of co-hosting the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 including its final phase is upon us, and the challenge to deliver has been known to come together and unite for causes most worthy, and the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023, I sincerely believe, will move us to showcase that quality to the rest of the world,” says SBP chairman emeritus and FIBA center board member Manny V. Pangilinan.

“I, therefore, invite every Filipino, from all walks of life, to be part of this global sporting event starting with the launch of its own Volunteers Program,” he added.

With 52 out of the 92 games to be staged in the country next year, volunteers would be deployed to different areas and render 10 shifts throughout the run of the event after undergoing a whole day’s worth of “customer training”.

“Work efficiency ng manpower natin ang mag-aangat ng ating hosting,” said event director Sonny Barrios.

Selected applicants can choose an area from sports, venues, games services, international relations and protocol, safety and security to FIBA World Congress among others.

“We at the SBP are in full support of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 Volunteers Program. We will extend all possible resources both here in Manila and around the country, to ensure that anyone who wants to contribute to this worthy cause is able to do so,” said SBP president Al Panlilio.
