The Metro Rail Transit (MRT 3) is not for sale, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) categorically stated Wednesday, November 9.
“Railway systems should remain the most affordable and safest mode of mass transit in the country,” Transportation Secretary Jaime J. Bautista stressed.
However, the DOTr "is considering the possibility of turning over the Operations & Maintenance (O&M) of MRT 3 to qualified private sector operators to improve its operational efficiency".

Privatizing MRT 3’s O&M does not mean selling the railway line.
The government retains ownership of all railways in the metropolis – Light Rail Transit (LRT) 1, LRT 2 and MRT 3, and continues to subsidize their operations to keep fare levels affordable.
“We are looking at partnering with private rail operators for MRT 3’s operations and maintenance – under the same scheme with LRT 1 – with the rail line’s assets remaining government owned,” Bautista maintained.
Privatizing MRT 3’s O&M not only enhances its efficiency and safety but also reduces its operational cost.
This way, the rail network will be able to maintain affordable fares for the commuting public.
