DOT showcases traditional 'Hilot' in London travel mart

To showcase the Philippines' traditional practices, the Tourism Promotions Board (TPB) has introduced a traditional wellness spa, locally called “Hilot”, in the 2022 World Travel Market (WTM) held in London.

The TPB, an attached agency to the Department of Tourism (DOT), has spearheaded the Philippine participation at the World Travel Market from Nov. 7 to 9 at ExCel London in Western Gateway, London, United Kingdom where the Philippine booth features popular destinations such as Palawan, Cebu, Boracay, Bohol, Siargao, the Cordilleras, and Manila, as well as highlighting the diverse cultural offerings including the Kadayawan Festival of Davao and the Bicol Express dish from the Bicol Region.

At the event, the TPB allowed event-goers to experience a nature-inspired wellness spa setting and indulge in an ancient Filipino healing practice called “hilot”.

Visitors were also treated to flair bartending, a food demo, and pocket performances by notable Filipino artists during the Philippine Networking Night.

"With experiential travel as one of the biggest travel trends in this post-pandemic period, our goal is to immerse visitors in the unique Filipino brand. The heart and soul of our people and the stories we fight to keep alive,” said TPB Chief Operating Officer Maria Margarita Montemayor Nograles.

“Wellness, sustainability, design, culture, and tradition are just some of the many components that come with our most recent travel packages. Coupled with our sun, beach and dive destinations, adventure tours, colorful festivals, and a mélange of culinary delights, we have high hopes for the Philippines to be a top-of-mind destination,” she added.

This year's edition of WTM is not only expected to benefit the global travel industry but also restore travel confidence, according to Nograles.

Hundreds of exhibitors, industry leaders, motivational speakers, and international celebrities also took part in the event.

Meanwhile, Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco expressed confidence in the prospects of the Philippines at the WTM saying that "There’s so much to be proud of in our country and there is no doubt that our country continues to be a top-of-mind destination notwithstanding all of the challenges and calamities that we have faced."
