Carl Tamayo puts premium on his recovery from an ankle injury by sitting out Gilas Pilipinas’ campaign in the fifth window of the 2023 World Cup Asian Qualifiers.
The 6-foot-7 Tamayo, who averaged 14.4 per game for University of the Philippines in the UAAP Season 85, will instead make use of the two-week break for rehabilitation of his sprained right ankle which he sustained after their first-round match against University of the East last Oct. 19.
The UP forward begged off from his national team duties to focus on regaining his full health back as well as his confidence inside the court.
“May mga previous injury ako na kailangan i-rehab. Sinusubukan namin kausapin yung Gilas. Nag-send naman kami ng formal letter to excuse. Nararamdaman ko sa sarili ko na I need to rest and rehab. I think Gilas will understand naman. Pagdating sa UP o kahit saan ako naglalaro, di ako nagtitipid ng laro,” said Tamayo.
With the Fighting Maroons already assured a playoff seat, head coach Goldwin Monteverde would rather have his team take a breather as they vie for another grueling championship bid.
“Pero ‘yung team during the break, siyempre ang haba rin at medyo tuloy-tuloy naman din ‘yung laro. So, we’ll get some rest siguro sa start,” said Monteverde.
Tamayo, for his part, will have a discussion with Gilas coach Chot Reyes about the decision as he didn’t want his injury to cause inefficiency on the floor and weigh down the Gilas crew.
With the development, Tamayo is now looking forward to the sixth window in February where he could stand at the height of his full strength.
“One of the reasons kung bakit dinesisyunan namin ni coach (Goldwin) na wag muna akong sumama ngayon kasi di rin ako makakatulong sa sitwasyon,” he added.
“Lagi naman ako open para tumulong sa Pilipinas. Ngayon lang talaga, feeling ko na alanganin yung sarili ko and I think Gilas will understand my situation. Hindi pa. Magpapaalam ako ng maayos kay coach Chot. Di na ako nakakasama dahil may injuries ako at rehab na kailangan alagaan o i-rehab. Yung injury, di naman sobrang sama kaya nakakalaro ako. Kailangan lang i-rehab,” he concluded.
