Between the layers
Elaborate and eclectic, abstraction is one of the many artworks we see in galleries and exhibits today. Since the 19th century, artists from all over the world give their unique spins on the concept. It is loved because of its sense of freedom and non-representational quality, giving every viewer the chance to have their own interpretation. While many might think that the aesthetic is made just by splattering colors, mixing materials, and compiling images, what they don’t know is that artists must work in layers to build truly captivating abstract art.

That is what Filipino visual artist Valen Valero wants people to know about abstraction. Through her latest solo exhibit, dubbed “Living in Modernity,” she presents pieces that are made of carefully collaged materials, that collectively make a personal map reflecting her past experiences, current beliefs, and where her visions are taking her in the future.
“I consider my works as semi-abstract... I draw lines, irregular shapes, and splashes of paint. My geometry is off-kilter,” expalinsValen, who creates art by gut feel. “I don’t do studies. I work straight on canvas and I just go with the flow. The objects that I added on the canvas look like they’re floating. I always like that effect. It gives more character and intricacy to my work—that 2D-3D effect.”

Valen’s journey to becoming an artist started when she was five. While she treated it more as a hobby at first, her passion became something beyond just leisure when she got her big break at age 19. She began working on impressionist art on paper in 2001. After finishing college, she decided to take things seriously by joining art exhibits to hone her talent. In the process, she discovered abstraction. Since 2012, she has been loyal to the craft, evolving through the years.
Valen marks her 22nd year in the art scene in 2022. Her years of experience are the inspiration behind “Living In Modernity.” The exhibit features six collages on paper, four mixed-media art assemblages, an artwork on canvas, and functional art that is the lav seat for the show. The collection features her master skill in using metal, wood, paper, and textured paint, among others, for abstract art.

“I layer my works with mixed media vocabularies and images that include elements of boxes, quadrants that are entangled with lines, and blocks that overlap,” she says. “I often employ bold colors in subdued tones. vertical lines with the elements of loops that cling and float in the pictorial plane providing geographical clues.”
Letters, numbers, and codes can also be seen in her works upon closer inspection, which are references to her emotional states and psychological suggestions. These are best depicted through her pieces Industrial Assemblage and Home Foundation, where words are peeking through piles of ripped fabrics and metals. Valen’s favorite piece is the Reflection, the exhibit’s centerpiece, depicting an image made of broken rulers, scrap metals, and graphic images and patterns.

“I was able to express myself freely. I had fun creating this piece,” Valen muses. “It reflects how I view and see things. Now that we live in modern times, reflection of my past, present, and future experiences.”
For Valen, great art is never done to perfection. It is the imperfections that make art extraordinarily beautiful.
“ to create something that will last for a lifetime, to touch the lives of others through art, and to continue doing my passion for the art until I grow old,” the artist says. “I will continue to hone my craft and, with hope, I will be able to create something different next time. It is important for me to evolve in my own way and not get stuck and do the same thing again and again. Growth is important to me.”
“Living In Modernity” is on view until Nov. 5 at Altro Mondo Creative Space, Makati City.
