Marcoleta says Paul Soriano's office 'embellishes' information

SAGIP Party-list Rep. Rodante Marcoleta has described the office of Presidential Adviser on Creative Communications Paul Soriano as one that "embellishes" information.

Marcoleta made this remark during a recent episode of Net 25's Sa Ganang Mamamayan, where he is a common guest.

The outspoken lawmaker was commenting on self-rated poverty among Filipinos in relation to the country’s spiking inflation rate when he brought up Soriano's office.

"Sa totoo lang eh talagang malaking problema ito...Lalong dumami ang mahihirap ngayon (The truth is, this is a really big problem...the number of poor people have increased)," he said.

"Ngayon dahil nagkaroon tayo ng opisina na nag- eembellish ng impormasyon, mayroon ngayong--anong tawag doon? (We now have an office that embellishes information, we have the--what do you call it?) Presidential Adviser on Creative Communications," Marcoleta said, without mentioning Soriano's name.

The former UniTeam Senate bet then went on to attribute to the particular office somewhat dismissive comments regarding September's inflation rate of 6.9 percent, which was the highest since October 2018.

"Ang sabi nila--siguro ito'y parte ng creativeness--sinabi niya, 'Oo nga medyo tumaas ang ating inflation rate. Ngunit huwag kayong masyadong mag-alala sapagkat maraming bansa sa Southeast Asia ang mas mataas ang inflation rate kaysa sa atin (They said--this might be part of creativeness--they said, 'Yes the inflation rate might have gone up. But don't be too worried because a lot of other countries in Southeast Asia have higher inflation than us)," Marcoleta said.

The solon claimed that the Philippines was compared to countries like Timor Leste (with an inflation rate of 7.4 percent), Lao Democratic Republic (17 percent), and Myanmar (16 percent), in order to show the public that the local situation wasn't that bad.

He didn't agree with this strategy.

"Akalain mo naman, bakit mo naman tayo ikukumpara naman--hindi naman pareho yung ating economic structure dyan (Can you believe that, why would compare us to--our economic structure is different from theirs)," Marcoleta said.

Soriano is the husband of popular showbiz personality Toni Gonzaga. The couple is an avid supporter of President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr.

Marcos was the de facto leader of the UniTeam ticket during the May 2022 elections.
