The Makati City local government was cited in the 2022 Urban Governance Exemplar Awards for its various programs and initiatives aimed at improving the lives of its citizens and increasing awareness of the public about climate change and other social and environmental issues.
The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), which spearheaded the awards, lauded the city government for taking the first place in the 2022 Assessment of Local Government UnIts (LGUs) Compliance with the Manila Bay Clean-Up Rehabilitation and Preservation Program (MBCRPP).
It also lauded Makati's high audit rating of its Peace and Order Council, Anti-Drug Abuse Council, and Local Committee on Anti-Trafficking and Violence Against Women and Children. It is also the top performer in its Informal Settler Families Cluster and Liquid Waste Management Cluster.
According to the DILG, the city has an overall compliance rating of 98.07 percent in the MBCRPP, 100 percent in its Liquid Waste Management, 96.67 percent in its Solid Waste Management, 100 percent in its Informal Settler Families, and 95.33 percent in its Information, Education, and Communication and Institutional Arrangement Cluster.
Aside from the five awards, Makati City Mayor Abby Binay also received the P300,000 cash price for the city' achievements.
"Proud na proud kaming tumatayo sa stage at tinatanggap ang mga awards na pinaghirapan nating ma-achieve. Repleksyon ito ng maayos na pamamalakad ng lokal na pamahalaan at ng magandang relasyon natin sa mga investor at negosyante sa Makati (We are so proud to stand on stage and receive these awards. These are reflections of the proper governance of the city government and our good relationship with our investors and businessmen in Makati)," Binay said.
"Of course naman, hindi pwedeng hindi pasalamatan ang ating ProudMakatizens para sa inyong kooperasyon, tiwala, at buong-pusong suporta. Nakasalalay sa inyo ang sigla ng ating lokal na ekonomiya at tagumpay ng mga mahahalagang proyekto. Hindi natin makakamit ang mga tagumpay na ito, kung hindi dahil sa inyo (Of course, we want to thank our ProudMakatizens for their cooperation, trust, and support. The prosperity of our local economy and success of our important projects are in your hands. We can never achieve this recognition if not because of you)," she added.
Earlier, the city government received three awards from the Department of Finance’s Bureau of Local Government Finance (BLGF) for being one of the top performing local government units (LGU) in the country in terms of revenue generation in 2021.
Binay said the city has been recognized as the Top 2 performing LGU in the country and Top 2 performing city in Metro Manila based on the 2021 highest locally sourced revenues.
Makati was also recognized as a Local Revenue Generation Hall of Famer based on the highest locally sourced revenues from 2018 to 2020.
According to the BLGF, Makati’s locally sourced revenue in 2021 amounted to P13,777,253,256.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the taxpayers, particularly the business sector, for doing their part despite the pandemic challenges. The business sector has been especially vital to our continued success, supporting our residents with jobs and contributing to the local economy through taxes and other fees,” Binay said.
The mayor attributed Makati’s sustained financial stability to the strong investor confidence it has continued to enjoy, buoyed by the reforms and smart innovations instituted by the city government in the past six years.
As of October 26, the city government has approved the registration of 3,875 new businesses this year, which have a combined capital investment of P23.2 billion.
The city’s strong revenue generation efforts are also a result of the strategic collaboration among all departments in the city government to create efficient revenue collection systems and processes, as well as effective policies that support these systems.
