Gabriela calls for extradition of ex-US diplomat charged with raping minors
Assistant Minority Leader and Gabriela Women's Party Rep. Arlene Brosas has called for the extradition of former United States (US) diplomat Dean Cheves after he pled guilty to raping two Filipino minors.

"Cheves must also be held accountable under our laws as the crimes were committed within our territory. The Department of Justice must exhaust all means to pursue the extradition of Chevez and bring justice to the victims and their families," Brosas said on Thursday, Nov. 3.
Cheves, 63, pled guilty to raping two minors while stationed at the US Embassy in the Philippines from 2017 to 2021.

Brosas warned that, as country's economic situation grows more volatile, more and more women and children would become vulnerable to abuse.
"Young girls from the poorest parts of the country are falling prey to foreign sex offenders who are exploiting the dire state of Filipinos under this economic crisis," she said.
"This is proof that the government must immediately address the ongoing crisis and strictly abide by its responsibility to protect the most vulnerable members of our society, especially women and children," the Makabayan lawmaker concluded.
