Residents, including students and workers in Cainta, Rizal will enjoy a two-day holiday on Nov. 30, Wednesday, a regular holiday nationwide, and Dec. 1, Thursday, which was declared as a non-working day.

President Marcos declared Dec. 1 as a special non-working day in Cainta, by virtue of Proclamation No. 97 signed by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin, to give the people of the town the ‘full opportunity to celebrate and participate in the Sumbingtik Festival and the town’s founding anniversary.

Nov. 30, which is Andres Bonifacio Day, is a regular non-working holiday in the entire country and also a special day for Cainta as the day is also the 451st foundation day of the town.

On Wednesday, Nov. 30, Cainta, Rizal local officials, to be led by Mayor Maria Elenita "Elen" Nieto will hold a wreath laying ceremony at the monument of Bonifacio outside the municipal grounds in observance of the hero’s 159th birth anniversary.

At 4 p.m., the streets of the town will be filled with participants to the grand float parade, one of the much anticipated activities during the town fiesta.

Liturgical celebration will also be held at the Diocesan Shrine of the Our Lady of Light (Madre Santissima Del Lume) in honor of the town’s first patron saint, Saint Andrew, The Apostle, whose feast day is also celebrated on Nov. 30.

The Cainta Tourism Office has also announced that the “Sumbingtik Festival 2022,” which was coined from the words "suman," "bibingka" and "latik," three of the famous native sweets and delicacies in the town, has always been celebrated with various activities that culminate with the feast day of Saint Andrew and the Madre Santissima Del Lume, respectively, as the residents’ way of thanksgiving.

The Cainta Municipal Government said this year’s Sumbingtik Festival 2022 carries the "Pistang Perya sa Cainta" theme (Carnival Feast in Cainta).

On Dec. 1, the feast day of the Our Lady of Light, a procession will be held following the holy mass at the shrine.

The devotion to the Our Lady of Light, represented by a painting portraying Mary holding the child Jesus and surrounded by cherubims was introduced to the people of the town by the Jesuit missionaries in 1727. The original painting was destroyed during the Philippine Revolution in 1899 but two original copies exist up to the present.

The present painting was done by National Artist Fernando Amorsolo in 1950 upon the request of then Cainta Parish Priest, Fr. Joseph Flameygh, CICM. The image was granted Episcopal and Canonical Coronation in 2012 and 2018, respectively.

The façade of houses in Barangay Sto. Nino in Cainta are now adorned with native delicacies that complement the carnival themed designs as part of the contest among villages in the municipality.

The holding of the Sumbingtik Festival started during the term of Mayor Johnielle "Kit" Nieto.
