Kidnapping suspect nabbed after victims beat him in QC

A man involved in alleged kidnapping in Cavite was arrested in Quezon City after his four victims mauled him while they were travelling to Manila on Monday, Nov. 28.

Lt. Col. Janis Ballesteros, Quezon City Police District (QCPD) Talipapa Station (PS 3) commander, identified the arrested suspect as Jose Rea, 42, from Taguig City.

The QCPD said that the suspect along with his five cohorts allegedly kidnapped Jay Quinones, 37; Dexter Timbas, 36; Mario Esio, 52, all residents of Caloocan City; and Angelica Nibungco, 25, of Malabon City.

Police said that prior to the kidnapping, the victims went to Zone 7, Brgy. Litlit, Silang, Cavite at about 3:30 a.m. on Monday to inspect a parcel of land pawned to Quinones by one Julian Paningbatan who is currently detained at the Metro Manila District Jail in Camp Bagong Diwa, Taguig City.

Quinones drove a motorcycle while the three other victims rode a Mitsubishi Montero in going to the site.

Upon the instruction of Paningbatan, the victims picked up Rea and his four companions in Tondo, Manila and in SM Bicutan Taguig, who accompanied them to Silang, Cavite.

When they arrived in Silang, the victims saw two more companions of the suspects.

The victims had a conversation with the suspects’ group, police said.

However, as the victims were about to leave, the suspects suddenly drew their handguns, threatened them and took their personal belongings including around P28,000 cash, cellphones, a watch, identification cards and the motorcycle.

They also blindfolded and tied the victims.

The suspects demanded P2,000,000 ransom per victim from Quinones before transporting them back to Manila aboard the victims’ SUV.

Rea’s four cohorts alighted from the van in different areas on their way to Manila, leaving him and the driver with victims.

Police said the victims managed to remove their blindfolds and ties, giving them the chance to grab Rea’s gun when they got stuck in traffic on the northbound lane of Epifanio Delos Santos Avenue (EDSA) in Barangay Unang Sigaw, QC at around 12:05 p.m.

They beat and held Rea while the driver managed to flee, police said.

The victims got off the car while holding the suspect, which led to a commotion.

Patrolling PS 3 officers arrested the suspect through the help of Barangay Unang Sigaw public safety officers and Metropolitan Manila Development Authority personnel.

Recovered from the suspect were his a 9mm Armscor gun and Quinones' cellphone, and the victims’ SUV.

Police recovered Quinones' motorcycle in a follow-up operation.

The suspect will be charged with kidnapping and illegal detention, grave coercion, carnapping, and for violation of Republic Act 10591 or The Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act before the Quezon City Prosecutor's Office, the QCPD said.

The QCPD also launched a manhunt operation to arrest Rea's cohorts.
