PH Army vows to pursue killers of two soldiers ambushed in Sipalay City
BACOLOD CITY – The Philippine Army said it will pursue the killers of the two soldiers who were ambushed on Thursday, Nov. 24, in Barangay Camindangan, Sipalay City, Negros Occidental.
The Philippine Army’s 302nd Infantry Brigade (IBde) condemned the killing of Sgt. Regie Glindro, 39, of Capiz province, and Staff Sgt. Ken Camilan, 41, of Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental.
“We will ensure that justice for the victims will be served,” said Brig. Gen. Leonardo Peña, commander of the 302nd IBde.
The soldiers were coordinating for the upcoming local peace engagement with the residents involving the former mass supporters of the NPA when they were shot by unidentified armed persons.
Both soldiers were intelligence operatives of the Philippine Army’s 47th Infantry Battalion (IB) based in Barangay Haba, Candoni town.
The Armando Sumayang Jr Command of the New People’s Army (NPA) Southwest Guerrilla Front (ASJC-NPA) has owned up to the ambush of the two soldiers in Barangay Camindangan.
The rebel group made the confirmation in an advisory released to the media on Nov. 25.
The 302nd IBde and the 47th IB assured the public that ‘despite this ‘cruel act’ perpetrated by the NPA, this will not hamper the soldiers’ efforts in supporting the local government to sustain peace and progress in their area of responsibility.’
Peña said the troops will pursue the perpetrators.
The 3rd Infantry Division (ID) also condemned in the strongest possible terms the NPA for the death of the two soldiers.
Maj. Gen. Benedict Arevalo, 3ID commander, in a statement, said these soldiers risked their lives to protect and bring peace to the people of Negros.
“We honor their heroism and sacrifices,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Regional Task Force-to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (RTF-ELCAC)-Western Visayas honored the memory of the men and women in uniform who have made the ultimate sacrifice of giving their lives in the line of duty.
In a statement, Prosecutor Flosemer Chris Gonzales, spokesperson of the legal cooperation cluster of RTF-ELCAC-Western Visayas, said ‘these killings are senseless, unjustified, and serve no purpose.’
Gonzales said the sacrifices of these soldiers shall not be in vain. “To the families of our fallen heroes, please accept the eternal gratitude of the people of this nation,” he added.
“We stand in solidarity with the people of Western Visayas in a common aspiration to attain a just and lasting peace by ending the local communist armed conflict,” he said
