Farmer dies, 5 hurt in tricycle-van collision in Quezon


GUMACA, Quezon – A 70-year-old farmer died while five others, including a two-year-old boy, were injured after their tricycle was struck by a van on the Maharlika Highway in Barangay Villa Padua here on Friday afternoon, Nov. 25.

Police identified the fatality as Victorino Calvelo.

Investigation said Calvelo and five others were on board a tricycle at 3 p.m. traversing the curve portion of the highway when a van occupied their lane after the driver lost control of the vehicle.

The van collided head-on with the tricycle and injured Calvelo, Danbert Caparros, 2; Aileen Villapando, 35; Senen Amolar, 69; Jacinto Huin, 49, and Jose Serjuelas Amolar, 58, tricycle driver.

They were taken to the Gumaca District Hospital and RAKKK Hospital. Calvelo was taken to San Diego Hospital where he died of serious injuries.

The van driver, Jeremie Lorena Masayon, 37, a resident of Tanauan City, Batangas, faces charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and multiple serious physical injuries and damage to property.
