Coast Guard CDO wants more substations to boost capabilities to respond to emergencies

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY -- The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Station Cagayan de Oro is looking to establish sub-stations in different parts of the city to boost its capabilities to respond to emergencies such as flooding and drowning incidents.

PCG Misamis Oriental and Cagayan de Oro commander Patrick John Cabasag said in a phone interview on Friday, Nov. 25 they are just waiting for the city government to provide the specific areas that would be used for the sub-stations.

“We are just waiting for the LGU to provide us the area and we have the personnel to be deployed, and the mayor has shown support to the initiative of the Coast Guard,” said Cabasag, referring to Cagayan De Oro City mayor Rolando Uy.

Cabasag said he made a courtesy visit to Mayor Uy on Monday, Nov. 21 and presented the proposal to establish sub-stations particularly in some of the flood-prone areas in the city.

This includes the barangays of Bulua, Lapasan, Puerto, Tablon, Carmen and Macasandig.

According to Cabasag, the Cagayan de Oro is one of the areas that has many drowning incidents, stressing that they have recorded more or less 10 drowning incidents in the city in a year.

"For now, our Coast Guard is located only in Macabalan, so we want to expand," he added.

Cabasag said Mayor Uy was very supportive of the initiative.
