Nanogenarian dies in Samar fire

TACLOBAN CITY -- A 91-year-old woman was killed in a fire in Barangay Karunungan, Jiabong, Samar on Thursday afternoon, Nov. 24.

The victim was identified as Cristina Jabien.

Initial investigation disclosed that at around 2:29 p.m., the victim's housekeeper saw that her bedroom was filled with smoke.

A fire broke out and she immediately called the victim's son to help save her. However, their efforts went futile.

Arson investigator Senior Fire Officer 1 Ralph Lemuel Agbon of the Jiabong Fire Station said the fire was under control at around 3 p.m. It was declared fire out at around 3:30 p.m.

Two houses were razed while three others houses were partially damaged.

Damage to property was pegged at P1 million.

Authorities have yet to disclose the cause of the fire.
