San Juan senior citizens receive cash gifts from LGU

Over 400 senior citizens in San Juan City received cash gifts from the city government on Tuesday, Nov. 22, as they were recognized for their invaluable contributions to the country's development.

San Juan City Mayor Francis Zamora together with other city government officials led the event held at the City Hall Atrium.

A total of 442 senior citizens who turned 70, 80, and 90 years old this year were given recognitions and cash gifts courtesy of the city government.

Zamora said 330 70-year-old seniors received P3,000; 90 80-year olds received P5,000; and 19 90-year olds were given P8,000. A cake-blowing celebration was also held during the event in honor of all senior citizens in San Juan.

“Ito po ay aming pasasalamat sa inyo dahil kayo po ay kinokonsidera kong aming gabay, nirerespeto namin kayo, at napakahalaga sa ating komunidad, sa ating lungsod. Nakikita natin ang tuwa ng ating mga senior citizens ngayon at hinabol talaga namin ang inyong birthday ngayong taon (This is our way of expressing our gratitude to all of you as we consider you as our guides that we respect and give importance in the community. We saw how happy our senior citizens are today as we also make sure to celebrate their birthdays)," Zamora said.

“Ang wish ko ay maabutan ko kayong lahat ng cheke sa inyong 100th birthday. Nakakaanim na po tayong centenarians sa San Juan (My wish is for all of you to receive your cheques on your 100th birthday. There are already six centenarians in San Juan)," he added.

The local government gives P50,000 to centenarians on top of the P100,000 given by the national government.

The city government explained that the cash gifts are in accordance with City Ordinance No. 81, series of 2022, or the Ordinance Further Extending Financial Benefits to Senior Citizens Who Have Reached the Ages of 70, 80, and 90 Years of Age and Providing Funds for the Purpose.

“We are doing this to recognize the efforts of our senior citizens in nation-building. This is also a way to help them with their needs. This is just the start of this program. So I am encouraging our seniors to register with our Office of Senior Citizens' Affairs (OSCA)," Zamora said.

Senior citizens living in San Juan who wish to enjoy these benefits may apply at OSCA and secure the following documents: senior citizen ID, proof of residency from their barangay, birth certificate, and any valid government ID with an address in San Juan City.

Meanwhile, Zamora stressed that the city continues to create programs for the benefit of its senior citizens such as the ongoing construction of a senior citizens’ center for their recreation purposes.

Senior citizen couples who will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary and are still married and living together are also entitled to P50,000.

The Public Assistance Center (PAC) through the Office of the Mayor and the Office of the Congresswoman is also open to giving them assistance including free burial assistance and cremation.

The Sangguniang Panlungsod is also drafting an ordinance that will give incentives to business establishments that will hire senior citizens and persons with disabilities (PWDs).
