PH eyes enhanced defense cooperation with New Zealand, Cambodia
The Philippines is looking forward to fortify its defense relations with New Zealand and Cambodia, the Department of National Defense (DND) said.

This, as DND Officer in Charge (OIC) Jose Faustino Jr. held separate bilateral meetings with New Zealand’s Minister of Defence Peeni Henare and Cambodia Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense Samdech Pichey Sena Tea Banh at the sidelines of the ASEAN Defense Ministers' Meeting (ADMM) Retreat and 9th ADMM-Plus in Siem Reap, Cambodia on Monday, Nov. 21.
During his meeting with Henare, Faustino discussed the status of the defense cooperation between Manila and Wellington.
Both defense ministers "welcomed opportunities to work together in various areas of cooperation, such as humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR), pandemic response, and climate change," according to DND spokesperson Arsenio Andolong.

Meanwhile, the DND did not provide specific details on the meeting between Faustino and Tea Banh although Andolong said the former was "warmly welcomed" by his counterpart from Phnom Penh.
Pursuing international defense and security engagements that are consistent to the administration’s foreign policy is one of the priorities of the DND under Faustino's reign.
In fact, the Philippines and New Zealand discussed the possibility of conducting bilateral engagements involving the Philippine Army and New Zealand Army on leadership and management, personnel development, and cyberspace domain during the visit of Col. Paul Michael Dragicevich, New Zealand Non-Resident Defense Attaché, to the Philippines last May 18.
The PA said it is interested to conduct engagements with the New Zealand Army in terms of military training and education, technology transfers, and intelligence and information exchanges.
The possibility of tapping the New Zealand Army for the development of a PA warrant officer program and training for further professional development of senior non-commissioned officers was also tackled.
Meanwhile, Manila and Phnom Penh have alrrady established mechanisms to further elevate their defense ties.
In 2019, both countries held the first Inaugural Philippines-Cambodia Joint Defense Cooperation Committee (JDCC) Meeting to facilitate the exchange of views on regional defense and security issues such as cyber security, counterterrorism and violent extremism, and peacekeeping operations.
The meeting was an offshoot of their Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Defense Cooperation forged in 2017.
