REFLECTIONS TODAY
A poor widow who puts two copper coins into the Temple treasury catches Jesus’ attention. Jesus is not concerned about the amount donated, but about the disposition of the heart of the donor. The poor widow could have kept one copper coin and offered only one, but she is very generous, and despite her poverty she decides to give everything that she has. Jesus sees in her generous offering a total surrender of her well-being to God’s hands. She entrusts herself completely to the providential care of the loving God. Jesus also observes wealthy people who put huge amount into the treasury. Yet to Jesus, the contribution of the widow has greater value since she gives out of her poverty. The big contribution of the wealthy, on the other hand, comes from their surplus wealth. After they have parted with some amount, they continue to enjoy a comfortable life. They do not have to worry about their essential needs and perhaps even enjoy luxuries.
Gospel • Lk 21:1-4
When Jesus looked up he saw some wealthy people putting their offerings into the treasury and he noticed a poor widow putting in two small coins. He said, “I tell you truly, this poor widow put in more than all the rest; for those others have all made offerings from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has offered her whole livelihood.”
