3 Pisay campuses bag top awards in Young Inventors Challenge in Malaysia


Top awards were bagged by three Philippine Science High School (PSHS) campuses at the special edition of the Young Inventors Challenge (YIC) in Malaysia on November 17.

According to the PSHS system, the YIC 2022 is organized by the Association of Science, Technology, and Innovation (ASTI), an association of educators, scientists, industry representatives, and individuals who are committed to advancing the role of the scientific community in inspiring the youth of the nation to join and excel in the world of science, organized the international competition.

David Elijah Corsini C. Atup, Josefino Nino O. Ligan, and Chesyne Danielle G. Pepito of PSHS-Central Visayas Campus (CVisC) with their entry, Portable Cyanide Concentration Detection Device Using Curcumin-Based Paper Strips, emerged as the grand champion after winning the Platinum Award.

Dr. Benito A. Baje, Engr. Gencianus Alphonsus D. Retardo, and Dr. Rey Y. Capangpangan served as coaches and consultants for the PSHS-CVisC students.

A total of 451 applications of which 358 teams submitted proposals from Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Brunei, India, the United States, and the Philippines.

“The success of Pisay delegates in the 2022 Young Inventors Challenge is a proof of the great potential of the Filipino youth to create innovations that can improve the way we do things. The winning projects of Pisay scholars can be used to help save human life and promote environmental protection,” said Lilia Habacon, PSHS System Executive Director.

With their innovation called PbSense-Leading Humans Away from Toxic Grounds: A portable Lead Sensing System, Judd Christian Bañas, Adriel Tillo, and Miko Miro, with their coach Engr. Nerry Catalonia Nuñez of PSHS-Caraga Region Campus won the Gold Award.

The team from PSHS-Ilocos Region Campus composed of Dranreb Jes G. Colcol, Decier Oliver R. Mapile, Jodi Emrian Salvacion B. Manlapaz, Aron Apreal R. Real, and Maxine Ruth A. Wapan, with advisers Kris Bryan Rialubin and Faith Tarlit bagged the Bronze Award through their project named CommuniTree: A Philippine Platform for Community-Driven Reforestation.

A panel of 80 judges evaluated the 121 shortlisted teams that submitted their invention pitch video and project report.
