Wesley So seizes solo second after six rounds in Meltwater Champions Chess Tour
Resurgent Wesley So routed Jan-Krzysztof Duda of Poland, 3-0, to grab solo second after the sixth and penultimate round Saturday, Nov. 19, of the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Finals 2022 in San Francisco, California.

It was the fourth straight match victory for the Cavite-born American after starting the seven-round tournament with a pair of crushing defeats to reigning world classical champion Magnus Carlsen and Vietnamese Le Quang Liem.
From there, the former world Fischer-Random king and two-time United States titlist has racked up four wins in a row with the first three coming at the expense of Indian rising stars Arjun Erigaisi and Rameshabu Praggnanandhaa and Azerbaijan’s Shakhriyar Mamedyarov.
These results catapulted So from the bottom straight to solo second spot with 12 points behind Carlsen, who virtually clinched the title with 17 points and a round to spare.
Carlsen’s most recent victim was Praggnanandhaa, 2.5-0.5.
So could clinch No. 2 if he could turn back Dutch Anish Giri, who hasn’t been himself after sputtering to seventh or second to last after falling to Mamedyarov, in the last round Sunday.
