Aldin Ayo explains Miller's benching: 'He overextended his birthday celebration'

Converge head coach Aldin Ayo felt that Quincy Miller needed more rest after he overextended his birthday celebration that led to his absence in their practice and eventually his benching in their 112-97 loss to NorthPort on Sunday, Nov. 20.

Ayo explained that Miller, who turned 30 last Friday, Nov. 18, overslept and missed the FiberXers practice the following day, prompting the coaching staff to not field him in Converge’s only third loss in the Commissioner’s Cup.

“He overextended his birthday celebration. He forgot to go to practice. Actually he was late for an hour and somebody had to wake him up to just inform him that we have a practice. I think he needs more rest mas mahabang tulog, makarecover siya so that’s the reason why I did not field him in,” said Ayo.

“It’s not a sanction or punishment or anything, we just felt that he needed more rest but he’ll be ready for our next game,” he added.

Miller’s absence could prove to be a little bit costly for the FiberXers as they missed their chance to go further up the standings and compete for the twice-to-beat advantage in the quarterfinals.

That however hardly concerned Ayo as he looked to settle the issues within Converge’s backyard first before worrying about the other teams in the leaderboard.

“Kung ano lang yung kaya naming kontrolin yun lang gagawin namin whether we make it to the top 2 or not. Pinakamababa namin na maabutan na spot will be the No. 4 so we’ll be fine with that as long as maayos muna namin yung bakuran namin, maayos muna namin yung preparations namin,” explained Ayo.

Ayo said Miller already apologized and actually wanted to play in the game but the rookie coach insisted on just preserving him for the final stretch of their schedule. He also reminded Miller that there was nothing wrong with the celebration as long as it was done in moderation.

“We accepted his apology but we told him that he has to face the consequences not only for him but sa aming lahat. We suffered yung pagiging absent niya sa game but again we are more concerned sa aming future practices and games,,” said the rookie coach.

“There’s nothing wrong with that as long as you put it in the right perspective, (in) moderation. You don’t overdo things but there’s nothing wrong with celebration.”
