Adamson fended off the late comeback of University of the East for a 74-64 win in the second round of the UAAP Season 85 men’s basketball tournament Sunday, Nov. 20, at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Didat Hanapi and Lenda Douanga posted a similar 13-point outing while Cedrick Manzano and JM Sabandal had 11 and 10, respectively.
The Soaring Falcons improved 5-6 in the standings to remain in contention for a playoff in the Final Four.
Adamson relied on its huge 27-7 second-quarter explosion to get itself going in the second half and turned back UE’s late surge.
After leading for much of the contest with the biggest being 22, 63-41, the Falcons had to protect their advantage in the final quarter once the Red Warriors regained consciousness.
UE managed to close the gap at 70-62 off Gani Stevens’ back-to-back layups before Nikko Paranada committed a costly turnover with 40.3 seconds to play.
Sabandal and Jerom Lastimosa then were sent to the line to ice the game.
“ really helped us a lot. We didn’t play that good in the second half. It was actually the only quarter that we won, but that gave us enough cushion not to play in the second half,” said Adamson head coach Nash Racela.
For UE’s side, Luis Villegas finished with 20 points including six assists while Kyle Paranada and Stevens had 14.
