Self-produced artist XTIE drives home the message of body positivity through new single 'Skin'

Inspired by a skin condition which XTIE has been facing since young, the song explores her ups and downs of having eczema and skin allergies, and how she embraces body positivity along the journey.

Skin is an exceptionally personal and vulnerable piece of XTIE’s song catalog. It is a song that carries great significance in her music journey as her skin concerns have profoundly shaped her identity as a person and as an artist. Having partnered up with an NGO, she hopes to further the message behind Skin through her social initiative.

“It’s a love letter between me and my skin… I never hated my body but I didn't love it until now.” 

On top of opening up to her listeners with her tribulations, Skin explores very relevant and important topics for today’s young people: body dysmorphia, the correlation between social media and body image, as well as physical and mental health. Body positivity is a main theme in Skin that XTIE wants listeners to bring their attention to. Fundraising initiatives with related charities will be engaged alongside the release.

The music video for Skin explores body positivity through contemporary dance based on lyrical improvisation by a group of dancers.

The dance item was choreographed and performed by Emily Lu, a choreographer based in Hong Kong and Los Angeles. Like XTIE, Emily is a performing artist that also struggles with eczema, and both artists looked to performing arts as a positive source of energy and advocate for body positivity.

XTIE and Emily incorporated their own unique experiences of body dysmorphia into the music video which they hope the audience can resonate with. The choreography includes movements that simulate habits affecting body language, like squinting in the mirror when trying on clothes to "filter out" eczema and excessive skin-picking.

The creation and production that went into the music video was an entirely organic and thought-provoking process where participants would encourage one another to be spontaneous and innovative with their ideas, and was a true testament to the human spirit and artist creativity.
