Classes suspended in Leyte, Southern Leyte due to inclement weather
TACLOBAN CITY -- Due to inclement weather, schools and local government units in Leyte and Southern Leyte suspended classes in primary and secondary schools on Friday, Nov. 18.
Baybay City Mayor Jose Carlos Cari issued an executive order suspending all classes in elementary and secondary in public and private schools due to bad weather and heavy rainfall.
“The entire Leyte province has been placed under an orange rainfall alert. Hence, we expect heavy rains so I am urging those living in flood-prone areas to be vigilant and evacuate once necessary, especially those living near the rivers,” Cari said.
Sogod, Southern Leyte and Abuyog, Leyte have also issued EOs while the school administration of Atty. Roque A. Marcos Memorial School in La Paz, Leyte sent the students home around 9 a.m.
The Tacloban City Division has reiterated strict compliance with Department of Education Order 37, Series of 2022, which sets guidelines on the cancellation or suspension of classes and work in schools in the event of natural disasters, power outages and power interruptions, and other calamities.
To ensure the safety and protection of all learners and personnel from unnecessary physical dangers that they may be exposed to due to the heavy rains being experienced in the area, there will be an automatic cancellation of in-person, and online classes and work from kindergarten to Grade 12 (all levels) and alternative learning system for such situation or case, the order said.
"To minimize the health and safety risk brought about by disasters and other calamities, DepEd recognizes that the suspension of classes and work during emergencies remain to be necessary for upholding the physical and mental well-being of learners and school personnel."
