Jesus... wept over it

REFLECTIONS TODAY A small chapel called Dominus Flevit (“The Lord wept”) stands on a hill overlooking Jerusalem. It is said to be the spot where Jesus had wept upon seeing the great destruction that was to happen to Jerusalem. He had worked hard to invite the inhabitants of Jerusalem to repent and to entrust their lives to God. Sadly, the people of Jerusalem persisted in their old wicked ways and refused to heed Jesus’ invitation. Jesus does not weep for selfish reasons. He cries not because his call is rejected by the people of Israel, nor does he feel that he is personally being spurned by his own people. Jesus’ focus is not on himself, but on the well-being of the people of Israel. He does not want them to suffer the great destruction that he foresees is coming to Jerusalem.

Gospel • Luke 19:41-44

As Jesus drew near Jerusalem, he saw the city and wept over it, saying, “If this day you only knew what makes for peace — but now it is hidden from your eyes. For the days are coming upon you when your enemies will raise a palisade against you; they will encircle you and hem you in on all sides.
