The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) will be working with the local government units in Bulacan for the development of the bamboo industry in the province, which it said, will also help in flood control measures in some parts of the province.
DPWH Bulacan Second Engineering District Office chief George Santos said that planting bamboo on the river banks is one of the better environmental options in flood risk management as it aids in preventing erosion.
“This initiative is truly laudable because it will not only help alleviate poverty by providing Bulakeños with a sustainable source of income, but can also solve current environmental issues such as flooding and soil erosion,” Santos said.
He explained that planting bamboo on the river banks is one of the better environmental options in flood risk management as it aids in preventing erosion.
The development of bamboo industry was discussed during the Bamboo Summit held at the CFC Multi-Purpose Hall of the Ipo Dam Compound in Norzagaray town.
In the summit, Bulacan 6th District Rep. Salvador A. Pleyto cited the importance of promoting the propagation of bamboo as well as its environmental benefits.
“By planting bamboo, we can create income opportunities and provide livelihood to the residents, lalong lalo na sa ating mga katutubo sa Norzagaray Bulacan. Masusuportahan at matutulungan natin ang mga residente ng ating distrito sa pamamagitan ng pagtatanim (bamboo trees) at pagtangkilik ng mga produktong yari rito (especially to the minorities in Norzagaray, Bulacan. We can help and support the residents in our district through the planting of bamboo trees and patronage of the products made from them),’’ Pleyto maintained.
