886 families in Biñan remain in evacuation centers

BIÑAN CITY, Laguna – Some areas here remain submerged in floods almost three weeks after severe tropical storm Paeng hit parts of Southern Luzon on Oct. 29.

Data from the City Social Welfare And Development Office showed that a total of 886 families or 3,606 individuals are still staying in nine evacuation centers as of Nov. 16.

One of the venues serving as a temporary shelter is the Alonte Sports Arena, where evacuees have been transferred from public schools that needed to be freed up with the resumption of face-to-face classes this week.

The local government unit (LGU), meanwhile, built temporary wooden bridges in flooded areas to help residents go about their daily activities without having to wade through murky waters.

The LGU also launched a program providing free lumber to residents who would want to build bridges within their compounds.

In a Facebook post on Nov. 9, Mayor Arman Dimaguila said floods in Barangays Dela Paz, Malaban, and San Jose may last for two months due to the overflowing of Laguna Lake.
