Should coaches be penalized for their players' violence? Pumaren says yes
Collegiate sports coaches who tolerate the violent behavior of their player-athletes should be penalized.

House Deputy Majority Leader and Quezon City 3rd Rep. Franz Pumaren supported this notion Monday, Nov. 14 as the viral basketball court rampage of Jose Rizal University (JRU) player John Amores caught the attention of congressmen.
On Monday afternoon, champion basketball coach-turned-solon Pumaren delivered a privilege speech expressing disgust over the brawl triggered by Amores last Nov. 9 wherein the latter punched at least two players from the opposing College of St. Benilde (CSB) team.
What's worse according to Pumaren is that the particular JRU cager had been involved in two other incidents within the previous five months wherein he showed tendencies of being violent.
In his interpellation of the privilege speech, Cavite 4th district Rep. Elpidio Barzaga Jr. asked Pumaren if he agreed that coaches should also be equally liable and given corresponding penalties.
"I 100 percent agree with that because they're (coaches) the ones who supposed to be making sure that everybody’s mentally fit and they shoudl be the one conducting those disciplinary actions," the Quezon City lawmaker said.
School officials should also intervene once they see "red flags", according to Pumaren.
" the same time, if there is already a signal or a red flag already that the coaches are tolerating those kinds of behaviors, I think the school officials should call the attention of the coaches."
Regarding the Nov. 9 incident, Pumaren said it was already a "bad sign" when Amores was angrily bumping into the referee.

He said there was a point late in the game when the JRU coach should have reined in his players--particularly the hot-headed Amores--since CSB had already built a huge lead.
"Medyo malaki na yung lamang eh, dapat kinontrol na niya (coach) yung player (The coach should have already control the player since the lead was already big). So I don’t know if tinolerate niya yun (So I don't know if he tolerated it)," he said.
