Senate approves Judiciary, DepEd's 2023 budget at plenary level

The Senate has approved the budget of the Judiciary for 2023 at the plenary level.

The Judiciary’s budget includes the funds for the Supreme Court, lower courts, Presidential Electoral Tribunal, Sandiganbayan, Court of Appeals and Court of Tax Appeals.

Sen. Sonny Angara, chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance said the Judiciary’s budget is slightly higher than the P52.72-billion provided under the National Expenditures Program (NEP).

Angara said the Judiciary’s budget for next year now stands at P53.370-billion under the Senate finance committee report.

The Senate has also deemed submitted the Department of Education’s (DepEd) proposed P667.18-billion and its attached agencies for 2023, including its requested P150-million allocation for confidential fund, for plenary approval.

During the plenary debates, Sen. Risa Hontiveros pushed for the realignment of the confidential funds saying there are “no extraordinarily compelling reasons” to approve the said appropriation.

“So at the proper time, I will make the proper time. I will make the proper proposed motion, proposed amendment on the realignment,” Hontiveros said.

Vice President Sara Duterte-Carpio was present at the plenary.
