PHNOM PENH, Cambodia—As many leaders expressed concern on global food security amid the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Ukraine has assured the world of a steady supply of wheat and grains to the market.

In an exclusive interview with Manila Bulletin, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said Ukraine has "a goal of remaining a reliable supplier of agriculture products to the global market."

But that will only happen if Russia continues to honor the Black Sea Grain Initiative, Kuleba said.

The initiative is a deal which the United Nations and Turkey brokered to allow exports from Ukraine of grain, other foodstuffs, and fertilizer, including ammonia, to resume through a safe maritime humanitarian corridor from Ukrainian ports of Chornomorsk, Odesa, and Yuzhny/Pivdennyi to the rest of the world.

"If Russia does not withdraw from the green initiative brokered by the United Nations and Turkey, we will continue to export our grains and flower oil and corn to the global market," he added.

In his intervention at the 41st Retreat Session of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summits here, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. called on both countries to cease the hostilities and think of the conflict’s human cost

“We are also concerned with the severe and disruptive international economic ramifications of this ongoing conflict, particularly on global food and energy security and commodity supply chains,” he said.

Ukraine is tagged as Europe’s breadbasket as it has an advantage of producing agricultural commodities. It is also the world’s top fifth-largest exporter.

Ukrain and Russia export about a quarter of the world’s wheat, according to the Observatory of Economic Complexity.

While Ukraine is committed to continue with its top export, Kuleba said food security of Africa, Asia and other regions of the world “depends on the commitment of Russia to abide by green initiative.”

“Even they violate this initiative, if they withdraw from it, there will be problems with food crisis,” he said.
