US envoy to PH pays homage to war veterans; enjoins citizens to learn from them
Each veteran has a story.

This was the reminder of United States Ambassador to the Philippines MaryKay Carlson as she paid homage to Filipino and American war veterans during Veterans Day.
In a ceremony at the American Cemetery on Friday, Nov. 11, Carlson joined the nation in remembering the sacrifices and heroism of those who served in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard.
"This Veterans Day, we take time to remember and celebrate those who have served. We also mourn those who lost their lives, and reach out to those who may still be struggling to heal, even decades later," Carlson said.
The ambassador recognized the American and Filipino soldiers who fought side by side on Corregidor, to defend Bataan, and to liberate Manila.
"We remember the Bataan Death March, where 75,000 prisoners of war trekked 65 miles under brutal conditions and where 9,000 Filipinos and 1,000 Americans lost their lives," she said.
She also acknowledged the "great sacrifices" made by allied forces in the Philippines and across the globe, adding that each veteran has their story we must take time to remember and learn.
"Our veterans left us an important legacy in the form of a strong alliance that has helped to create peace and prosperity in the region. As we reflect on this legacy, let us also remember that each Veteran has a story," the American diplomat said.
"Let us take the time, not only to thank them, but to learn their stories. And in doing so, to honor them, and lend a helping hand if needed," she added.
Carlson thanked the veterans and active-duty personnel for answering the "call to duty." She also recognized the Veteran Service Organizations for its contribution to improving the lives of veterans here in the Philippines.
