The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) warned the public against death caused by accidental drowning.

In a statement on Friday, Nov. 11, PRC said that one of the causes of drowning is the rip current, a "localized current that flows away from the shoreline toward the ocean."
The organization noted that deaths caused by rip currents could be avoided through proper skills and training.
"It only takes a second for a child or someone who is not a good swimmer to drown. Death and injury from drownings, especially at the beach, happen every day," PRC Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Richard Gordon said.
He added that PRC always conducts water safety training for all ages.
"To survive a rip current, do not panic. Allow the water to tumble you around. Once you have aligned yourself with the water surface, swim upward. Swim slowly back to the shore at an angle. If you can, call and wave for help," PRC advised.
"To know more about the Philippine Red Cross Water Safety Program, contact the PRC Safety Services at (+63 2) 8790-2365, (+63 2) 8790-2300 loc. 934/933, [email protected], or visit the PRC website at www.redcross.org.ph/trainings/," it added.
As per the World Health Organization (WHO), 6 to 7 in every 1,000 deaths in the country yearly are caused by accidental drowning.
Thirteen percent of this is associated with alcohol consumption, WHO added.
According to a study conducted by Jonathan P. Guevara, children also have a higher risk of drowning than adults.
