Sound technology has considerably evolved through the years. Mention Dolby Atmos and those in the know will say it's the gold standard in surround-sound. Apple Music and most of the foreign streaming movies are on Dolby Atmos. The format, known for providing an immersive, spatial experience, is also built-in now in most branded home theater systems, sound bars and mobile phones, to name just a few.

After much waiting, the first Dolby Atmos Home Entertainment Certified Studio in the Philippines is now open in Pasig City. Behind the venture is a group of professionals  committed to bring the premium Dolby Atmos  mastering service to people in the entertainment and music industries.

The group is led by Waxie Joaquin, an executive mastering engineer who is also the founder of Waxiefied Sound Production. Joining him are his buddies - acoustic engineer Jiggs Hermano, Peter Hager, Mccoy Navales and Vito Syquia.

“With Dolby Atmos music, songs can live and breathe in new ways to fully immerse you. It has levels of detail and depth that you simply can’t hear with standard sound," the team said while showing the media their Mastering Suite which is  totally sound-proof, has mood lighting and is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment. No less than Dolby personnel from abroad paid a visit to check if the installation was up to par with the label's stringent specifications.

"A lot of people still don't understand what Dolby Atmos is, but once you experience it, you just know it," Waxie said. He expressed excitement at the fact that artists can uncover and enhance their creativity with the help of the cutting-edge technology of Dolby Atmos.

The current situation is that artists or their companies go abroad or use overseas providers for the post-production  of their content before submitting it to digital streaming platforms like Apple Music.

Waxie said now that  a Dolby Atmos certified studio is open in the country:  "They can send it (the recording) to us, instead of sending it to another country. We'll quality control it, we'll master it, make it sound good, and stamp it with Dolby."

"With the track record and expertise of our team, we are confident to produce topnotch and immersive quality audio that will give a multidimensional approach to storytelling,” he added. In the long run, the studio also hopes to remaster the sounds of bygone times - the kundimans, Apo Hiking Society, Hotodg, VST & Co., and the rest of them. "We hope their labels give us access to the tracks," he noted.

Word has spread and Waxiefied already gained clients even before the studio could formally open. These include Nicole Laurel Asensio, New Game Plus, Dan Gil and Marga Jayy. Most prominent is James Reid who had some tracks of his latest album "Love Scene" remastered in Dolby Atmos.

Among the showbiz personalities who attended the studio's opening last Nov. 5 were Kapuso actor Alden Richards, Director Perci Intalan, Iwi Laurel, Flip Music's Jellica Mateo, Director Cedrid Hornedo of X1 Digital , Wila Baliw's Ian Tayao, and Mike Pedero.
