Climate crisis is world's 'collective responsibility' --- Marcos
PHNOM PENH, Cambodia—It is the world’s “collective responsibility” to address climate change as developing countries, such as the Philippines, are more vulnerable to its effects, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. told his fellow state leaders here.
During his intervention speech at the 40th and 41st Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summits, Marcos said developed countries are playing a “bigger role” in global efforts to mitigate effects of climate change.
He said developing countries are the ones suffering its wrath and are losing more when climate shocks hit.
Developing countries even have fewer resources to cope with the adverse effects, the President added.
According to Marcos, the regional bloc can address the challenges by strengthening its cooperation mechanism on environmental sustainability and holistic green economic strategies.
Marcos, concurrently heading the Department of Agriculture, raised the need to enhance climate resilience by "using new agricultural technologies" to solidify food security cooperation and food self-sufficiency in the region.
"We need to shift our paradigm from the old, traditional farming methods to climate-smart agricultural systems, to better shield us against the ongoing adverse effects of climate change," he said.
