In a statement, DepED said that Amelia R. Persia of Donsol National Comprehensive High School in Region V; Brian James Cerdena of Pinagbuhatan High School in the National Capital Region (NCR); and Key B. Calpito of Cabarroguis National School of Arts and Trade in Region II will represent the Philippines in the said competition to be held on Dec. 11 to 17, 2022.

DepED said that the students were the top three winners in the recent 10th ASEAN Quiz National Competition that was participated in by 17 Grades 9 to 10 students from the country’s 17 administrative regions.

The national competition was held at PTV Broadcast Center in Quezon City in May.

DepED said that the ASEAN Quiz Regional Competition will be participated in by the 10 ASEAN member countries that include Vietnam, Cambodia, Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam, Thailand, Lao PDR, and Singapore.

The ASEAN Quiz, which started as a project of the ASEAN Committee in Culture and Information (COCI) in 2002, is a bi-annual competition participated in by students of public and private secondary schools from the 10 ASEAN Member States.

Moreover, it aims to elicit the spirit of healthy competition among the ASEAN youth in a friendly quiz game to promote knowledge and understanding of the roles and functions of ASEAN, particularly in achieving and maintaining regional peace, solidarity, and prosperity; fostering friendship among the ASEAN youth, promote ASEAN awareness among the general public and encourage the participation of the private sector in the event.

DepED said that the Philippine representatives to the previous seven Regional Competitions have consistently won: in 2002 (hosted by Thailand, individual delegates competition) – 1st and 2nd place; in 2004 (hosted by Brunei Darussalam, individual delegates competition) – 1st place; in 2006 (hosted by Malaysia, individual delegates competition) – 2nd place; in 2009 (hosted by the Philippines – country competition) – 1st place; in 2012 (hosted by Cambodia – individual country competition) – 1st place; in 2014 (hosted by Vietnam – individual country competition) – 1st runner up; in 2016 (hosted by Lao PDR – individual country competition) – 1st runner up; and in 2018 (hosted by Indonesia – individual country competition) – 2nd runner up.

DepED noted that in 2020, the Philippines was unable to participate in the 9th ASEAN Quiz Regional Competition hosted by Singapore due to continuing mobility restrictions amid the Covid-19 pandemic and compounded by the typhoons “Rolly” and “Ulysses” that hit the country.
