Palay, corn output likely improved in Q3—PSA

The country’s palay and corn output likely increased in the third-quarter this year based on standing crops as of August, according to a report released by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).

Data from the PSA on Tuesday, Nov. 1 showed that the estimated production of palay and corn from July to September 2022 was at 3.83 million metric tons, slightly higher by two percent compared with 3.75 million metric tons in the previous year.

However, the PSA’s latest projected output was marginally lower than the 3.85 million metric tons estimate based on standing crop as of July 1, 2022.

According to the PSA, palay output may have increased to 3.83 million metric tons in the third-quarter, or 2.2 percent higher from the actual 3.75 million metric tons in the previous year.

PSA, however, noted that the updated estimate of palay output was lower by 0.4 percent than its 3.85 million metric tons outlook last July 2022.

Moreover, the estimated harvest area of palay likely improved to 928,200 hectares or by 1.7 percent, from 912,660 hectares actual estimate a year earlier.

Likewise, yield per hectare inched up by 0.5 percent to 4.13 metric tons from 4.11 metric tons last year.

In the quarter ending September, about 113,380 hectares or 12.2 percent of the 928,200 hectares updated area of standing crop have been harvested as of Aug. 1.

Meanwhile, the estimated corn production may have reached 2.37 million metric tons, 3.3 percent higher from its actual estimate of 2.29 million metric tons in the same period of 2021.

The updated estimate of corn production as of Aug. 1 was also higher by 1.2 percent from its estimate of 2.34 million metric tons last July.

The estimated harvest area between July and September, on the other hand, decreased to 790,470, or 2.3 percent from 809,270 hectares actual estimate a year ago.

But the yield per hectare of corn improved to three metric tons from 2.83 metric tons in the same period last year.

About 213,760 hectares or 27 percent of the 790,470 hectares updated area of standing crop have been harvested as of August 1;

Of the updated harvested area based on standing crop, the actual production was recorded at 658,480 metric tons.
