Biñan under state of calamity; 5,620 individuals displaced by 'Paeng'

BIÃ‘AN CITY, Laguna â€“ The local government unit (LGU) here declared the a state of calamity in the city on Oct. 31 due to the effects of severe tropical storm "Paeng."

According to City Resolution No. 105, the severe tropical storm displaced 1,359 families or 5,620 individuals in 16 evacuation centers.

Severe flooding was recorded in 11 barangays, particularly Casile, Dela Paz, Malaban, Mamplasan, Platero, San Antonio, San Jose, San Vicente, Sto. Tomas, San Antonio, and Sto. NiÃ±o.

Clearing operations, meanwhile, are being undertaken in areas covered in mud.

In a Facebook post, Mayor Arman Dimaguila shared photos of the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (CDRRMO) cleaning out the sludge along roads near the city plaza and the public market.

As residents struggle to recover from the effects of the storm, the city government announced that public elementary schools and high schools would temporarily shift to modular distance learning (MDL) from Nov. 2 to 4.

Public schools currently being used as evacuation centers are also encouraged to continue implementing MDL until all evacuees are able to return to their homes.
