Frustration mounts as UST absorbs seventh straight loss

Nic Cabanero expressed frustration as University of Santo Tomas continues to struggle with its seventh straight loss in the UAAP Season 85.
The 19-year-old Cabanero was furious when the clock expired in UST’s 56-55 defeat at the hands of Adamson last Nov. 5 where they blew away a 19-point advantage early on.
Up by two in the final seconds of the match, the Growling Tigers failed to put up a defensive stop to Cedrick Manzano who knocked the game-winning and-1 play for the Soaring Falcons.
“That time, frustrated ako syempre sa self ko. We could win the game eh, sayang. Six seconds, matatalo ka pa. Dalawa ‘yong lamang namin tapos gano’n ‘yong mangyayari. Syempre frustrated ka talaga. So, super sad ako ngayon. Di ko na ma-express kung ano ‘yong masasabi ko eh. Kailangan ko rin kasi ng someone who [will] step up for our team. Di lang naka-depend sa akin,” said Cabanero.
Now with a 1-7 win-loss card, the Tigers are not liking their chances of making it into the playoffs as lapses have not been remedied yet.
UST assistant coach Ronald Magtulis echoed the sophomore’s frustrations and took accountability on behalf of the coaching staff as their campaign doesn’t seem to be going anywhere.
“Ang problema tulad nung nasabi niya kanina, ‘yong sa amin hindi nagsasabauy-sabay ‘yong pagputok eh. Paisa-isa lagi. Nu’ng last time si Adama (Faye) naman ‘yong pumutok 23 points yata. Si Nic naman hindi pumutok. Ngayon si Adama three points lang. So, hindi nagsasabay-sabay. ‘Yon ‘yong problema ng mga coaches. Dapat at least tatlo sila. Every time, isa lang lagi. So, wala talang nagse-step up,” said Magtulis.
With a two-week break to regroup, the UST side would put its losses behind and focus on its remaining games.
“Syempre depsite nga sa struggles namin and even na eight place kami sa standing, syempre iniisip pa rin namin na gusto namin manalo,” Cabanero added.
