Classes, work in Leyte, Samar suspended for 9th commemoration of STY 'Yolanda'
TACLOBAN CITY – The local governments of Tacloban, Palo, San Isidro, and Carigara in Leyte and Marabut in Samar have suspended classes on all levels and work in government offices on Tuesday, Nov. 8, for the ninth commemoration of super typhoon ‘’Yolanda’’ (international name ‘’Haiyan’’).

Tacloban City Mayor Alfred Romualdez issued an order canceling work and classes to give way to series of activities that will be held by different groups.
These commemorate the occurrence as a way to recognize the lessons that ought to be learned from the experiences and pay homage to the people that suffered and those that survived the catastrophe as well as to highlight the resilience of the people of Tacloban City, he said.
Members of the local media will hold the 9th Yolanda Media Memorial at 3 p.m. at the Noblejas Junction to remember their colleagues who perished during the super typhoon.
Other activities lined up include a resilience exhibit, Mass, wreath-laying, resiliency forum, blessing and flower offering at Yolanda Memorial Flame, and candle-lighting ceremony.
Palo Mayor Remedios Petilla also suspended work and classes to accommodate the influx of survivors, volunteers, and donors from all over the Philippines as well as international non-government organizations who helped them rise from the ruins and rebuild their lives.
Carigara Mayor Eduardo Ong Jr. said the Yolanda anniversary is an opportune time for them to honor the lives of those who perished and salute the selflessness of the volunteers and organizations that contributed to the recovery and rehabilitation of the affected communities.
Other LGUs badly affected by Yolanda are also expected to issue work and class suspensions for Nov. 8.
Yolanda, which ravaged Eastern Visayas and other areas in 2013, killed 6,300 and storm surges were experienced in some coastal areas.
In Eastern Visayas or Region 8, 5,902 were killed, and Tacloban was tagged Ground Zero.
