The solution to in-prison corruption? Death penalty, says Abante
The re-institutionalization of the death penalty is Manila 6th district Rep. Bienvenido Abante Jr.’s proposal to combat corruption within the country’s penal system.

"As long as there are criminal elements like drug lords who can access their resources beyond prison walls, they will be in a position to bribe or threaten their jailers....Year in and year out we see the same problems in our prisons and these have plagued several administrations,” Abante said on Friday, Nov. 4.
A recent raid conducted within the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City yielded improvised weapons, cellphones, and in one instance, thousands of cans of beer being sold to inmates for P1,000 each.
The heightened scrutiny on prisons comes after it was revealed that late NBP inmate Jun Globa Villamor was involved in the killing broadcast journalist Percy Lapid.
So, for Abante, the solution is to “remove these criminals and you remove the source of corruption".
"The death penalty is the permanent solution for these irredeemable criminals. The sooner the death penalty reimposed, the sooner we will be able to implement reforms in our penal system,” he said.
Abante authored House Bill (HB) 4121, which seeks to reinstate the death penalty for crimes such as treason, qualified piracy, rebellion, coup d’etat, malversation of public funds or property with involved amounts exceeding P75,000,000, parricide, murder, rape, kidnapping, robbery, estafa, arson, drug crimes, plunder, carnapping, and violations of the Anti-Hijacking law.
These crimes would be entail capital punishment via either firing squad, hanging, or lethal injection, as per Abante’s measure.
